Saft (TotalEnergies) × Naval Group — Sovereign Lithium-Ion Batteries for Barracuda and Scorpene Submarines

Saft, a TotalEnergies subsidiary, secured a major strategic contract from Naval Group to supply proprietary lithium-ion battery systems for the Barracuda and Scorpene submarine classes. Transitioning from legacy lead-acid chemistry, Saft’s defence-grade Li-ion technology delivers higher energy density, extending underwater mission endurance and tactical stealth. Battery cell electrochemistry design and manufacturing are fully localised in France, aligning with French and European defence sovereignty mandates. Both companies are French, making this a fully sovereign EU defence energy partnership.
